What happens if the post cards get sent with 28 cents on it after the fee increase?
My maid of honor went to the post office on Friday and asked what would happen if I would have sent all 250 of my invitations earlier this week with just 28 cent stamps (on April 17th, 2011 post card stamps will go up to 29 cents) on my RSVP cards. Since most people don't put their return address on post cards, she asked how would it work if only the mailing address was on it and my RSVP post cards were sent after the date (April 17th, 2011)? The U.S. post office employee informed her that the cards will be sent to the mailing address, but that the person who gets the cards will be charged an extra 1 cent. It's STUPID...I know. I'm not sure how they can keep track of who needs to pay less or not. Even the employee thought it was absolutely idiotic for them to increase the post card stamp costs and not warn people ahead of time. Plus, the post office doesn't make much money off of post card postage since most people don't send those anymore.
I just thought it was really strange because usually when the prices for regular stamps goes up, the post office warns everyone months ahead of time. In that way, it gives time for people to buy forever stamps.
Just make sure, before mailing out your invitations, check if there is any price changes between the day you send out your invites to your actual wedding date (not your deadline because there's always going to be a handful of people who forget to send in their RSVP). Also, don't get your stamps until you are completely ready to send it out. Lastly, when sending your invitations...don't put them in a regular mail box...go up to the post office teller and hand give it to an employee. In that way, the employee can double check if the postage is correct. The last thing you want to happen is that they all your invitations come back because you put the wrong postage amount (which I've seen happen) which can be avoided 100% by giving it to the employee/teller at the post office.
