The Risks of an Outdoor Reception

10/2/12

I absolutely love the feel and look of outdoor weddings, but if you plan to have one, there are some risk factors that you must consider.

1) Wind- Wind can be a huge nuisance when it comes to have an outdoor event.  In case of any wind whether it's light or strong, you have to make sure your decor is properly weighted down.  If your centerpieces are tall and lightweight, you'll bet that it'll make a splash or crash!  Not only may things topple over, but it can also screw around with the sound system.

2) Cold- Don't go cheap, get heat lamps if you know it's going to be cold.  If your guests are cold, they're going to want to go home early or find an indoor space to hang out in.

3) Rain/Snow/Thunderstorms/Etc.- This is pretty obvious.  Most venues that are designed to have events will typically have a backup plan for scenarios like this.  In all cases, make sure you know of a tenting company JUST IN CASE if there is no real backup plan.

4) Birds/Bugs/Squirrels- It's never any fun when seagulls (if you're near the beach) or pigeons (if you're in the city) are trying to attack you while you're eating.  Of course you can shoo them away, but some of these birds are so used to humans that they're not afraid of you anymore.  That's why those signs say "Please Do Not Feed the Animals!"  It drives me nuts when people feed random birds or squirrels.

5) Grass-  If the flooring is grass for the entire event, make sure to warn your guests to wear flats.  I went to a wedding without knowing it was all outdoors and it had all grass.  After walking for about 5 minutes, I took off my heels because my shoes kept digging into the grass and I would get stuck.

Lastly and most importantly, if all possible, make sure to pick an outdoor venue that is designed to host events.  Especially when it comes to having an outdoor event with a large number of guests, there are a lot more logistical factors that you must figure out or plan out for.

These risks are what outweighed the pros for me :(

Awww. That's a bummer. I guess it also depends where you have the wedding too and season.
